"Patient Zero" is the lead single from The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore, the expanded reissue of Taylor Swift's twelfth studio album. It was released on September 25, 2026 through Republic Records. Swift wrote and produced it with Max Martin and Shellback.
The song tells the story of an emotionally abusive relationship and speaks to someone going through the same thing. Musically it is a mid-tempo pop song led by a Celtic folk-style fiddle riff, with muted electronic production, hip-hop percussion and disco beats.
Chart success
"Patient Zero" reached number one on the US Billboard Hot 100, the Canadian Hot 100 and the Billboard Global 200, and also topped the charts in Australia, Germany, Ireland, New Zealand and the UK. It made The Life of a Showgirl Swift's first album since 1989 with three US number-one singles.
The music video
Swift wrote and directed the video herself, with cinematography by Emmanuel Lubezki. It premiered at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards and draws on thriller, true crime and gothic cinema: Swift plays a ghost haunting an affluent couple played by Colin Farrell and Dakota Johnson, with guest appearances by Matthew Stafford and Cara Delevingne.
